The reformers cried "Ad fontes!" The meaning behind this was that they would no longer accept any authority greater than that of scripture alone. The reformers wanted to go back to the fountains, or back to the source from which true sound biblical doctrine flowed; the Bible as written in the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts.
